Although extremely rare, this Install Error / Launch error can appear when installing/updating any Gradience professional or Enterprise software title or when attempting to launch the software after installation.
The image below is just one example of this error:
The error might also read 'Gradience' is not a valid short file name.
The error might also read 'TimeStation' is not a valid short file name.
...or any number of other ways.
Three Possible Solutions. Although we are unable to recreate the error here, we have discovered several ways to resolve it but we have not settled upon a single solution that works in all cases. Because of this, we offer below the three solutions we have found that work. You may have to try more than one of them before you are successful.
--IMPORTANT NOTE-- If the error occurred while installing TimeStation alone, you must include TimeClock when reinstalling. Reinstalling TimeStation alone won't resolve this issue. Afterward you may drag the TimeClock shortcut into the recycle bin. Even if you left it on the screen, the employee will not be able to access the administrative portion of the software because he/she lacks the requisite login and password.
Solution One:
1. If you have already been running Gradience, copy the database file (hrware.gdb) and the backup folder and save them both to a neutral location. The default location of these two items is C:\Programdata\Gradience.
2. Delete all Gradience folders from the C:drive and then reinstall.
3. After reinstalling the software, replace the new, blank Hrware.gdb and backup folder with the originals you copied earlier.
Solution Two:
1. Locate the installation file.
If the steps above fail to resolve the issue move on to step 2.
2. Rename the local Hrware.ini file. It is located at C:\Programdata\Gradience.
3. Stop Firebird in Services.
4. Uninstall Firebird.
5. Uninstall Gradience Professional.
6. Rerun the installation to update Gradience.
--NOTE-- If the error occurred while installing TimeStation alone, you must include TimeClock when reinstalling. Reinstalling TimeStation alone will not resolve this issue.
7. Rename the newly created Hrware.ini file and correct the name given to the original Hrware.ini file.
8. Launch the software.
Solution 3:
If this occurred at a client, this solution would have you reinstall as a standalone, thereby creating a new, blank, local database on the client workstation and then re-point the local ini file back to the database on the server. Please follow the steps below.
1. Go into Services and stop Firebird.
2. Uninstall Firebird and Gradience.
3. Go to C:\Program Files (x86) and delete the Firebird folder if you see one there.
4. Go to C:\Programdata\Gradience and delete the Hrware.ini file if one is there.
5. Reinstall and select Standalone. Do not click Test Connection during installation because it may fail and cause you to not continue. Just click Next.
6. After installation, launch it once and enter as demo just to get in. Don't worry about a product key and please use admin admin to get in. Once in, close-out and don't back up.
7. Go to C:\Programdata\Gradience and open the Hrware.ini file. On the 4th line from the top, change Localhost to the name or IP address of the server as illustrated in the image below. Save the change, close the ini file and then launch the software.
Do not concern yourself with any other line on this file. Do not map a drive and do not use UNC.
